IEC Advanced Practitioner

The IEC Advanced course is the most up to date advanced first aid and trauma course currently available to non-healthcare professionals in the UK.


It covers all the skills proposed by the Faculty of Pre-Hospital Care and the National Fire Chiefs Council.


Designed in conjunction with Fire & Rescue specialists, police, military and NHS professionals, it is delivered by instructors who work at the cutting edge of pre and in-hospital care.


Aim of this course

The aim of the course is to reduce preventable pre-hospital deaths by training candidates to identify and treat life-threatening emergencies and prepare casualties for rapid evacuation to hospital.

It is ideal for any emergency services, law enforcement or security personnel and all those working in remote areas. With specific modules for burns, suspension trauma and crush injuries, further modules can be tailored to suit your specific organisational risks.

Course delivery

The IEC Advanced Practitioner course is delivered as an intensive three-day advanced first aid and trauma course.

Upon completion of the course, students are awarded an IEC Advanced Practitioner certificate. These certificates are valid for three years.

Summary of syllabus

The course syllabus includes the following :-

  • Kinematics – How to perform a ‘SCENE’ approach and predict injuries based on the forces and motion involved.
  • Catastrophic bleeding control – Learn to manage catastrophic external bleeding with the use of advanced pressure dressings, tourniquets, wound packing techniques and haemostatic dressings.
  • Airway management – Develop skills in identifying and managing airway obstructions, including the use of suction devices and adjuncts such as oral, nasal and supraglottic airways
  • Breathing – Study serious chest injuries and their management, including the titration of Oxygen therapy and the use of chest seals.
  • Circulation – Examine how the circulatory system works and how to identify and treat shock
  • Disability – Identify and treat head injuries and learn how to prevent secondary brain injuries
  • Extremity Trauma – Identify and treat fractures and soft tissue injury using a wide range of splints and slings
  • Burns – Understand the different types, severity, and treatment of burns
  • Packaging and evacuation – Learn the different ways of packaging casualties for rapid evacuation and choose appropriate extrication and transport equipment for time-critical patients
  • Special Circumstances – Discuss adaptations for treatment for victims of drowning, crush injury and suspension trauma
  • Paediatrics – Understand the differences between adults and children and adaptations required when assessing and treating the ill or injured child.
  • CPR and AEDs – Learn the Resuscitation Council 2015 guidelines and the safest and most effective way to use AEDs
  • Analgesia – Understand how to assess a casualty’s pain and then support the administration of both Entonox and Methoxyflurane

'Train the Trainer' bolt-on

This instructor addon course is available to students who already have an IEC provider qualification, typically following immediately after their 3-day provider course.


This ‘train the trainer’ bolt-on allows instructors to cascade training within their organisation under a Trauma Resus licence, with continued support and clinical governance from our team.


Once trained, and subject to Trauma Resus’ licencing and clinical governance, new Instructors can begin delivering the IEC course to their own candidates.


Aim of this course

The aim of this course is to give IEC providers the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively deliver their own provider courses and ongoing maintenance of skills training.

Course delivery

This instructor course is delivered as a 2 day initial instructor programme for students who already have an IEC provider qualification. Typically these 2 days directly follow their 3 day initial provider course.

Upon completion of the course, students are awarded an IEC Instructor certificate (valid for one year).

IEC Intermediate Practitioner

The IEC Intermediate course is the perfect starting point for organisations embarking on a project to deliver pre-hospital care beyond the level of First Aid at Work.


It is also the perfect solution for Fire & Rescue Services with a high volume of retained stations.


Designed in conjunction with Fire & Rescue specialists, police, military and NHS professionals, it is delivered by instructors who work at the cutting edge of pre and in- hospital care.
